Death on a Picnic Table

Reuters : July 3, 2013

Before you reach for that multi-colored scoop of sweet goodness, watch out for the excessive amount of calories and pesticides says the CSPI.

Tuesday, in anticipation of the upcoming July 4 holiday where more Americans than ever will be attending picnics and reveling in eating out, the Center for Self proclaimance and Perceived Importance released their findings on a picnic standby, Fruit Salad.

“The amount of calories that can possibly be hidden in syrups and sugars that your Aunt Betsy add could be tragic. And, that doesn’t take into the account the possible minute traces of pesticides that can build up in a body over the course of 70 to 80 years. ”

The CSPI, a self-proclaimed consumer advocacy group which allows them privileges not even the Tea Party can have,  release this type of mindless

fruit salad drivel every six to eight months to justify their existence.

“Did you know that a medium banana is over 100 calories? Imagine that with another 12 pieces of fruit. It boggles the mind!” Feinstein gushed animatedly as he chewed a piece of celery and then proceeded to spit out the fibrous remains.

“If it wasn’t for our group continually telling people how ignorant they are in terms of nutritional knowledge, they wouldn’t know what to do.” Feinstein added.  “Look at the shape I’m in. I’m 6’ and I weigh only 135 pounds. I’m the picture of health!”

So, the next time you reach for your 7th or 8th helping of fruit salad, remember, you could be setting your body up for extreme obesity and cancerous growths in the years when your on life-support. Thank goodness for groups such as the CSPI to keep us straight.

Cosby no longer in Guardians movie.

Reuters: Hollywood, CA

We ran into Bill Cosby at an outside Diner in Hollywood Hills today. While he was waiting for his lunch to arrive at Julio’s Hacienda we decided to ask him about a rumor we just created.

When asked about the future of his iconic character, Leonard, Bill Cosby replied in the negative when questioned about his involvement in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

Bill-Cosby

“No, I really can’t see me getting involved” the comedian/writer/actor answered.  “I mean, I’m flattered that you would ask, but really. I have no idea what a Guardian of a Galaxy even is, let alone if it’s a Jell-O flavor. It must really be a slow news day for you guys, huh?”

Mr. Cosby then proceeded to go back to his lunch of mashed carrots and strained peas.

Passing of a legend

For all of us lovers of fantasy fiction we mourn the passing of Richard Matheson, the master writer who gave us classic Twilight Zone stories and literally started Steven Spielberg’s career when he adapted Matheson’s story, Duel.

20000

His stories are way too  numerous to list here, but, rest assured, most of you have seen them either on Twilight Zone, Night Gallery, Alfred Hitchcock presents, etc…

RIP Richard and thank you.

Father’s Day

I hope everyone is reminiscing about the good things about their Fathers.

Do we all remember, for those of us that had fathers growing up, your first Atticus moment?

The moment where you discover a talent or moment of past behavior  of your father that you didn’t even know he had or was capable of?

An Atticus moment, for those not familiar with the name, is that moment in To Kill a Mockingbird where Atticus picks up the rifle and puts down the rabid dog while Scout watches him in wonderment and awe. After that occurs, Scout suddenly discovers a fact about her Father that she had never known before. This shapes her perception of him for the rest of the story.

It is those moments when we realize our fathers are more than we thought.Atticus

Until we encounter our Atticus moment, we thought of our Fathers, well, as Fathers, not real human beings. They were the ones who told us what not to do, and often imbued upon us tiresome (at that time) nonsensical parables and metaphors.

If we were lucky, we had more than one Atticus moment with our Fathers.

I had a few Atticus moments with my Father. Yet, the one Atticus moment that made an impression on me was when I learned that he had driven his truck through the race riots that occurred in our city at the time. As an avid reader of heroic fiction at the time this floored me. And, he delivered this information to me in such a nonchalant manner you would have thought it was nothing. Just a ride down the street.

It was then that I realized my Father was more than I realized.

When I brought up this theory to my wife-to-be she commented that her Atticus moment with her adopted Father was the moment she discovered that he was a Golden-gloves boxer.  She also felt that that was the moment when her Father relegated himself to reality.

I hope you all had your Atticus moments with your Fathers.  And, in reality, those Atticus moments are the ones where, in reality, we appreciate and admire our Fathers more than we ever had before.

Happy Father’s day and sanguinely for those that still have their Fathers present in life, enjoy your day.

Man of Steel

The day has arrived. Man of Steel screens tonight. However, I wait with trepidation.

It’s no secret that Kal-El is my favorite fictional character. Along with Doc Savage, the values that his creators imbued him with have always appealed to me. So, I should be excited. Right?

Wrong.

I was taken down this path seven years ago. When Superman Returns came out. While the initial audience reaction was favorable, I felt as though I was the only one who left the theater in disappointment. What was supposed to be a continuation in the great Reeves/Donner tradition became a billboard for a creator’s own feelings of alienation and uneasiness in society (and, poor Brandon Routh…).

Yuck.

I’m really hoping that this time a good story emboldens this character once again to us, the general public.  I’m also hoping that this writer and director don’t have any burning issues and desires to vent onto the screen.

Yes, I realize that the story of an orphan, a man who is taken in by good, decent folk, is taught such strong values that although he has abilities and powers far beyond his fellow man that every time he uses those powers the words and lessons he was taught echo in his mind is an intriguing story. But I really don’t want to see how you feel that it relates to your life. No, I don’t.

I want to see an epic, heroic, FANTASY story.

Of  all the super heroes, Superman, although he is an alien, is the most human.  More so than any of them. Batman? Fun, but obviously psychotic. Wonder Woman?  A god among mortals. Aquaman? A mixed race ruler. But, Kal/Clark? He is human as human is. In fact, it can be argued that his values are stronger than all of them combined.

I guess that it is a testament to the character that interpreters of his story touch so many people personally. So much so that they use the character to express their own desires and fears vicariously through the character.

So, enough of my rambling. Here’s to hopefully a good Superman film.  And, if not, hey. At least we got to see another one!  What a great age us curmudgeonly old fans live in. I mean, really, who could have expected films based on Steel or Iron Man?

Up, Up and Away!!

A Rave (Finally)

As many of you can surmise, with my interest in comic books it would only make sense that I would be a Sci-Fi fan in general.

You would assume correct.

Additionally, many of you know of my disdain for some modern filmmakers which I feel are over-hyped.

Mr. Abrams, for this example.

I am going to make this short. Star Trek: Into Darkness.

Go see it. Period.

This movie is what a re-boot, re-imagining, homage, etc… is all about.

Why people are not seeing this in droves is beyond me. It not only is how a story should be told, it is a far superior film to any that have come out in recent memory in the fantasy genre.

I’m not going to play spoiler and discuss it, I am just going to say, again, go see it.

Quite frankly, Mr. Abrams has graduated in my opinion to a real filmmaker.

Oh, by the way. For those of you praise The Avengers. Trust me, after seeing ST:ID you’ll realize how flaw-filled that picture is.

The Modern state of entertainment reporting

This is an unfortunate rant…………….

Has anyone else noticed the state of modern entertainment reporting?  The Ain’t it Pathetic News syndrome is what I happen to name it. Everything now is based on speculation. “If this would have happened then that would have occurred.”

Really?

Did it happen?

 No.

Then who cares?

Honestly, who cares.

If it didn’t happen then it didn’t happen. Since when is reporting based upon speculation and innuendo? My gosh, this fanboy crap is becoming simply nauseating.

Before, these type of speculative articles were reserved for the AICN, kids’ basements, and other such web sites. Now, it has permeated legitimate news sites. Case in point: the reason for my rant, the “How ‘Dune’ almost prevented ‘Star Wars’ from ever being” on the Fox News page.

Really, this is news?

Again, what crap. And, the saddest thing is to think that an editor green lighted such a turd of a story.

Under the premise of a Cannes film festival documentary we get an entire article/documentary based upon ‘what if?’, “Jodorowsky’s Dune”.

Apparently this entire documentary is a big ‘could have been’ story on a failed attempt at making a movie based upon Frank Herbert’s classic Sci-Fi novel.

Again, who cares?

I’m sure that there are many movies that get to the stage of ‘almost’ and then get shelved.  Thankfully.  However, again, I ask, is this really news?

It’s just my opinion I guess, but I say no. Instead, if I want to speculate on what ifs and wouldn’t it be cools I’ll just buy a pizza, and some soda and invite my sons, nephews, nieces, and their friends and talk about such things.

Who knows, maybe we’ll be so insightful that we’ll start our own cable access/podcast show.

Now, wouldn’t that be cool?

A True Hero

What makes a good heroic story? Well, to some of the ‘learned’ writers, it is taught that a heroic story consists of a person that suffers loss and hardship on their quest for redemption or fulfillment.  In its most simple connotation this is true. I know that I live with a heroic figure by the prior definition. However, heroic sagas are most of the time reserved for the pages of fiction.

This young man is the real life example of the heroic saga. He lived a saga where he didn’t just talk about it, he did it. He published his own comic book. Many of you who know me personally know that is one of my most important philosophies. That those that do, even if they do it not so well, stand head and shoulders over those that just talk about doing things.

So, the next time any of us want to wallow in our petty miseries just think of Zachi who recently won his battle on this plane of existence to enter the next…

Allentown boy conjures his own comic book superheroes while fighting cancer

In his five-year struggle with cancer, 12-year-old Zachi Telesha has found strength by inventing his own comic book superheroes.

While he can’t fight the illness away, the Allentown boy feels a kinship between his own hardships and the challenges his creations face in battling supervillains and saving the world.

“My superheroes are based on the struggles that can happen to anybody,” Zachi said. “There’s a bright side to every dark side. Just like every superhero has a good side and a dark side.”

Zachi was 7 years old when the bone cancer osteosarcoma was discovered in his left femur and spread to his lungs. Since then he has endured multiple surgeries and invasive chemotherapy regimens, and the cancer has relapsed four times.

But his imagination was never hindered, and during those same years he was conjuring up his own superheroes, members of a crime-fighting team called Hero Inc.

Zachi always had dreams of publishing his own comic book. And, last year, that dream came true.

With help from the McKinley Elementary School in Allentown, Zachi was able to publish “Hero Up!” — a 32-page comic that chronicles the origins and battles of Zachi’s slate of heroes.

“I honestly think it was a God-sent miracle,” Zachi said. “There’s no way I’d have been able to raise the money to get a publisher or editor. I’d probably have had to save my whole life’s allowance to publish just one book.”

A five-year struggle

Since his diagnosis in the summer of 2008, Zachi has had bones removed from his legs and replaced with titanium rods. His chest has been surgically opened so doctors could remove tumors from his lungs by hand, centimeter by centimeter.

But the cancer has persisted. Last month, his doctors found new small tumors in his lungs, and those already there had grown. And on Monday, treatment began on newly developed tumors in his neck.

About a year ago, a doctor said he probably only had 3 to 6 months to live. But Zachi felt otherwise.

“He said, ‘I kind of don’t think I have a short time, mom. I think I have a little while longer,'” said Susan Telesha. She and her husband, Marc, adopted Zachi in 2011.

He’s said before, ‘If I could only be my superhero, I could knock this cancer out of me and I’d be alright.'”

“Besides his limp, you would never know he’s still sick,” she said. “He’s a trouper. He’s been through hell and back.”

Zachi also faced difficult personal experiences.

Before he was adopted, his biological father, Alfredo Reyes Ortiz, beat his mother to death with a baseball bat. Ortiz pleaded guilty to third-degree murder in November 2010 and was sentenced to 20 to 40 years in prison.

But McKinley Principal Richard Kern said despite everything Zachi has faced, he has always maintained a positive attitude and enthusiastic spirit that makes him an inspiration to everyone around him.

“He’s a true definition of the word ‘resiliency,'” Kern said. “Even when he has dark days, he always seems to come around to find some ray of hope or some ray of light there.”

Publishing his own book

Speaking from his Lehigh Valley Hospital room, Zachi exudes unbridled excitement about the superheros he invented.

There’s Venom-Girl, whose incredible speed and agility lets her dodge nearly everything. And Venom-Transporter, the Hero Inc. leader who can paralyze his foes. Or Venom-Combat, an archer who received his powers when an aura surrounded him during a “difficult time in his life.”

“Sometimes he wishes he could be one of his superheroes, because cancer is this evil villain,” Susan Telesha said. “He’s said before, ‘If I could only be my superhero, I could knock this cancer out of me and I’d be alright.'”

Currently a sixth-grader at Trexler Middle School, Zachi was attending McKinley last year when employees from the Emmaus-based publisher Rodale Inc. learned of his dream to publish a book.

Rodale is a corporate sponsor with McKinley through its role as a COMPASS Community school, an initiative aimed at giving students access to resources and support through various community partnerships.

Rodale and McKinley officials worked with Zachi to collaborate on his dream book. He spent five months working with Rodale writers, editors and graphic artists, Kern said.

Thirty hardcover copies were printed for Zachi and his family, and another 1,000 softcover copies are for sale at Trexler for $10. All proceeds go to the Lehigh Valley-based nonprofit Angel 34, which supports children with pediatric cancer.

Zachi is expected to undergo surgery Thursday for the tumors discovered in his neck. They are pressing against his spinal cord and could lead to paralysis if left untreated, Susan said. But that hasn’t slowed Zachi’s imagination. He is still thinking up stories for his next comic book, and is maintaining the positive attitude he is known for.

“I guess it’s something God put into me that allows me to be positive,” he said. “I try to find the bright side in every situation, no matter what.”
